For Child

The fascinating world of bees

Children's Workshops

Our main mission is broadly understood education. In connection with this, we organize interesting and inspiring workshops for children and youth, which will introduce them to the fascinating world of bees and show them the work of a beekeeper. Their scope is selected according to the age, level of knowledge and predispositions of the participants. During them, we try to stimulate all the senses, so the classes are conducted in the formula LISTEN – SEE – TOUCH. This is an excellent opportunity to develop imagination, perceptiveness, self-confidence and emotional intelligence. We conduct workshops both in our apiary in Toporzysko, as well as on the premises of kindergartens, schools and public benefit institutions (e.g. cultural center, library, community center). Please contact us by phone (+48 666 692 624) or email (mail@pkp.edu.pl) to arrange a convenient date and format of classes.
Theoretical knowledge

What will children learn during workshops?

During workshops organized both on the apiary and in educational institutions, children can learn many interesting things about bees, their life and work. We are happy to talk about what a hive looks like and what elements it consists of. We show equipment necessary for work in an apiary. We explain the differences between bee species, as well as how these small furry insects:
  • obtain honey and other products,
  • communicate with each other and with other animals,
  • take care of their family and the queen,
  • help plants and the environment.
In addition, we place great emphasis on how we can help and protect bees. We also provide knowledge on the use of bee products in everyday life, such as honey, bee bread, propolis, royal jelly or pollen. To diversify the classes, we use richly illustrated teaching aids regarding the world of bees. They are adapted to the different age groups of workshop participants. We have both props showing the development cycle of a bee and detailed anatomical models of these insects.
Activating classes

Learning through play

A good workshop for children is not only about learning, but also about having fun. That is why our pupils can try different types of honey and healthy treats made from them. Did you know that by mixing real bitter cocoa with honey and hazelnuts you will make a cream resembling Nutella, only a lot healthier? The tasting is carried out in accordance with strict hygiene rules (we use gloves, disposable dishes and spatulas). It is possible to combine it with a lesson on sugar and its negative impact on our body. Let us explain to the child how healthy snacks differ from those that can be very harmful. VR goggles are very popular among children. After putting them on, you can feel like a bee flying for pollen and nectar. The same is true for headphones, thanks to which you can listen to sounds straight from the hive, and a microscope, which allows you to see the world of small organisms, inaccessible to the naked eye, but very fascinating.
We also do interesting experiments, e.g. using balloons and polystyrene balls. In this way, children will learn through great fun how a bee collects pollen from the flowers it visits. Using our observation hives we show its interior without having to disturb the bees, and thus minimize the risk of stings. Older children can learn the ins and outs of a beekeeper’s work by looking into the hive themselves and carrying out basic work in it (e.g. inspecting the hive or selecting frames of honey). We can also enrich the classes with making candles from beeswax by themselves. Unlike paraffin candles, they do not emit harmful substances when burning. In addition, they have a beautiful scent and a warm color. It is a great souvenir from a visit to the apiary.

Safe learning and fun

Are workshops for children in the apiary a good idea?

Our apiary is a child-friendly place. We can present the fascinating world of nature using the example of bees. We also teach respect for nature, which is extremely important especially in the face of climate change. Beekeeping workshops for children begin with teaching how to behave safely around bees and other insects that can sting. Appropriate substantive preparation for the first visit to the apiary practically eliminates the possibility of being stung. In addition, we provide protective clothing. In the vicinity of our apiary, we also have other (less bee-related) attractions for children. These include, among others, a trampoline, a jungle gym and swings. Using our location, we will also show children some aspects of life in the countryside: sheep, chickens, horses, our own vegetable crops and an orchard. We will also prove that in today’s world you can live without electricity.
These are just some of our attractions. Children are never bored during their visit to us. We know the specifics of working with them and we can provide the right amount of attractions adapted to their age and energy level.
